Britannia adopts Sidel’s aseptic PET line for dairy beverages

Britannia Industries has installed its first aseptic PET packaging line for dairy drinks, with technology supplied by Sidel.

The installation is located at Britannia’s greenfield dairy plant in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, India, and supports the company’s expansion in the Winkin’ Cow beverage range, which entered the market in 2018.

The collaboration with Sidel included planning, technical setup, equipment installation, commissioning, and operational enhancements.

To address food safety requirements, Sidel provided a complete packaging line featuring its Aseptic Combi Predis technology.

This line processes 24,000 bottles an hour and combines several steps, specifically preform sterilisation, blow moulding, filling, and capping.

Its dry preform decontamination process uses hydrogen peroxide applied to the preform before heating. This is intended to provide thorough decontamination while reducing chemical and water use.

Britannia chief sales transformation officer Abhishek Sinha said: “Sidel offered a comprehensive range of services, including new packaging concept design, packaging validation, label recommendations, custom filling tests and shelf-life studies.

“They provided everything we needed to enter the aseptic PET segment and bring our new product to market with maximum confidence.”

The system monitors key production parameters to maintain sterility and product quality across different beverages to reduce the operator training needed and minimise production downtimes.

The line is expected to reduce water and chemical consumption, addressing both resource use and environmental impact.

Sidel South Asia sales vice-president Harbinder Kathuria said: “Sidel offered Britannia end-to-end support, enabling them to unlock the full potential of their dairy beverage.

“From bottle and label design to product-packaging validation, the line has empowered Britannia to expand its dairy beverage portfolio and offer safe, high-quality products with enhanced packaging flexibility to Indian consumers since 2023.”

Last October, Sidel introduced Nitro Square, a square PET bottle for still water that incorporates liquid nitrogen dosing.
