Vital Proteins switches collagen peptides to 80% paperboard canister

Nestlé Health Science brand Vital Proteins has announced a significant shift in its collagen peptides packaging, moving from plastic to an 80% paperboard canister.

This change is a first for the brand in its decade-long history within the collagen product category.

The new sustainable collagen packaging aligns with the growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products.

The paper-based canister is made from fibres sourced from responsibly managed Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified forests.

This transition is expected to reduce plastic use by more than 90% across all Vital Proteins canister offerings, equivalent to nearly 1,800 tonnes.

The company has also designed the new packaging to be kerbside recyclable, further reducing waste.

The first product to feature the updated design is Vital Proteins’ Unflavoured Collagen Peptides, now available in a 24oz size at club stores.

By next month, a 20oz canister option will be available at national retailers.

The brand aims to complete the transition for all its collagen peptide products by 2026.

The new canister design, featuring a patented pull-tab lid for ease of use, is an outcome of three years of research and development (R&D).

The packaging has undergone extensive testing to ensure product freshness and canister durability against leaks and spills.

The canister’s design is splashproof and moisture-resistant, featuring a waterproof inside polymer layer and an external water-based varnish.

Despite these changes, the product inside remains unchanged, providing 20g of collagen peptides per serving.

This initiative is part of Vital Proteins’ broader commitment to sustainability, which includes removing plastic scoops from its canisters and responsibly sourcing collagen peptides.

Vital Proteins general manager Jill Abbott said: “As pioneers in the collagen category, we feel a responsibility to lead when it comes to investing in sustainability initiatives.

“The road to get here wasn’t always easy, but we’re incredibly proud to take this meaningful next step in our journey toward a more responsible future as we introduce our new paper-based canister – and to be the first collagen brand to do it.”
