Berry joins NextGen Consortium-led Petaluma Reusable Cup Project

Sustainable packaging company Berry Global has joined the Petaluma Reusable Cup Project, a NextGen Consortium-led initiative, to promote reuse and circularity in packaging.

The project, which began on 5 August 2024, involves 30 US chains and local independent restaurants in Petaluma, California, including Starbucks, The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Peet’s Coffee, and Yum! Brands.

Participating companies are offering reusable cups as the free, default option across their stores, thereby providing Petaluma residents convenient access to reuse.

The Reusable Cup Project has also installed 60 cup return bins across the city, where consumers can drop off their cups after use.

Berry’s contribution to the project includes supplying some of the reusable cups, which are part of its B Circular Range.

These 24oz cold cups made from widely recyclable high-density polyethylene are designed to support the circular economy and help brands meet sustainability goals.

Designed by NextGen Consortium, the purple cups feature a ‘Sip, Return, Repeat’ branding and a serialised QR code for tracking and data analysis, which will aid in assessing the scalability of the reuse model.

Collected reusable cups will be cleaned and recirculated by logistics company Muuse to participating businesses.

The collaboration is in line with Berry’s effort to achieve a circular reuse model by ensuring reusable cup durability, traceability, ease of return, and eventual recyclability compared to single-use cups.

Berry Global sustainability vice-president Diane Marret said: “This trial underscores the importance of partnership within an industry to drive innovation in reuse and advance a circular economy.”
