CARBIOS and Sleever unveil eco-designed tamper-evident seal

Biotech company CARBIOS and Sleever, a shrink sleeve label technology provider, have introduced a home-compostable biodegradable tamper-evident seal.

Dubbed SEELCAP ONEGO, the seal is the first development under their partnership.

The seal integrates CARBIOS Active, an enzyme solution for biodegrading polylactide, into its biopolymer blend, marking a dual innovation in both material and design.

SEELCAP ONEGO, developed in partnership with designer Fabrice Peltier, is an eco-designed tamper-evident concept that ensures product safety while allowing easy opening with a gripping flap.

The material, featuring CARBIOS Active, fully disintegrates in composting conditions at room temperature within a six-month period.

The product is currently awaiting ‘OK Compost HOME’ certification from TÜV Austria.

The introduction of SEELCAP ONEGO has the potential to reduce carbon footprint by up to 70% compared to traditional shrink capsules.

It also enhances the circularity of packaging, addressing the growing demand for sustainable solutions in the industry.

This solution aligns with the increasing need for safety, traceability, and mass production capabilities in packaging.

SEELCAP ONEGO is designed to seamlessly integrate into existing filling lines and is compatible with Sleever’s shrink-fitting equipment, Combishrink and Combiskinner, catering to a wide range of production capacities.

The innovation will be showcased at the upcoming LuxePack Monaco event at the Grimaldi Forum from 30 September to 2 October 2024.

CARBIOS CEO Emmanuel Ladent said: “I’m delighted to present SEELCAP ONEGO to the market, the first innovation resulting from our partnership with Sleever.

“Thanks to the integration of CARBIOS Active, we have jointly developed the first tamper-evident seal that can be composted at ambient temperature, offering a valuable alternative when recycling is not an option. This is a concrete application of CARBIOS’ mission to find innovative and sustainable solutions to rethink the life cycle of all types of plastic.”

The development of SEELCAP ONEGO follows the signing of an exclusive, long-term contract by CARBIOS and Sleever to co-develop home-compostable biodegradable shrink films.
