AMP-Europe expands VPPA portfolio with BNZ in Portugal

Ardagh Metal Packaging-Europe (AMP-Europe), a business unit of Ardagh Group, is continuing to expand its virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) portfolio by signing a deal with Portuguese energy producer BNZ.

The agreement, which commences in 2026 for a duration of 12 years, is set to secure 146GWh per annum of renewable electricity certificates.

This strategic move is anticipated to offset approximately 50% of AMP-Europe’s continental energy consumption.

AMP-Europe CEO David Spratt said: “We are delighted to partner with organisations like BNZ that share our commitment to accelerating a clean energy transition.

“This VPPA marks a significant milestone in the expansion of our VPPA portfolio in Europe and is a major step towards AMP’s CO₂ [carbon dioxide] reduction and renewable electricity goals.”

The deal was facilitated by Schneider Electric, a corporate renewable energy procurement and carbon management company, which provided support in project selection and VPPA negotiation.

This latest VPPA follows a solar energy agreement AMP-Europe secured in Germany earlier this year with Sunnic Lighthouse.

AMP-Europe plans to continue collaborating with Schneider Electric on additional PPAs. The goal is to meet its target of 100% renewable electricity by 2030.

Schneider Electric Global Cleantech and Renewables vice-president John Powers said: “Making renewable energy more accessible to every organisation is a crucial part of meeting global emissions targets.

“We thank AMP-Europe for their concerted efforts toward this endeavour. It has been a pleasure to collaborate along shared values and the promise of a sustainable future.”

Last month, Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe, another division of Ardagh Group, secured a long-term VPPA with Rezolv Energy.
