Huhtamaki begins smooth moulded fibre production at Lurgan facility

Huhtamaki, a company specialising in food packaging, has initiated the production of smooth moulded fibre (SMF) lids at its existing facility located in Lurgan, Northern Ireland.

This development highlights the company’s dedication to bolster its global capacity and presence in the SMF product sector and address the increasing demand for eco-friendly packaging solutions.

The investment will complement Huhtamaki’s existing production capabilities in Germany, Holland, and the US, as well as through partnerships in Asia.

Leveraging more than four decades of expertise in fibre products, the company’s SMF technology ensures high-quality and competitive offerings.

All fibre lids produced by Huhtamaki feature a patented click-fit function that guarantees a secure closure.

Furthermore, these lids, along with other SMF products from Huhtamaki, are home-compostable and readily recyclable.

Huhtamaki Fiber Foodservice E-A-O president Fredrik Davidsson said: “We are very excited to start supplying locally made smooth moulded fibre lids to our customers also in the UK and Ireland. This investment is a demonstration of our commitment to working with our customers to deliver sustainable packaging solutions from nearby.

“Our technology provides products with superior quality and competitiveness, backed by a 70-year legacy of paper pulping at Lurgan.”

Headquartered in Finland, the company provides sustainable packaging solutions globally, serving the food and beverage industry, as well as the personal care sector.

The company said it is committed to achieving carbon-neutral production and aims to design all its products to be recyclable, compostable, or reusable by 2030.

In June this year, Huhtamaki announced the consolidation of its Flexible Packaging manufacturing sites in the United Arab Emirates.
