Cans for Cash initiative to boost aluminium recycling in Blytheville, Arkansas

Every Can Counts US, a partnership between aluminium beverage can manufacturers and aluminium suppliers, and recycling platform Replenysh have launched a new community-driven recycling programme to increase the recovery of aluminium cans.

Launched in Blytheville, Arkansas, the ‘Cans for Cash’ initiative is set to expand with four additional Circularity Centres in Florida, Illinois, and Mississippi. This programme specifically targets communities situated near major waterways with limited or non-existent recycling access.

The ‘Cans for Cash’ programme is designed to encourage recycling, reduce waste in landfills, and decrease litter, particularly around significant water bodies.

It also aims to stimulate local economies by offering direct cash incentives for individuals who participate in recycling empty aluminium cans.

Can Manufacturers Institute Every Can Counts US chapter trade association sustainability senior vice-president Scott Breen said: “This is an impact-driven programme that will increase recycling and access points near major American waterways. This partnership will also make significant investments within local communities that lack kerbside recycling.

“Our innovative model leverages the power of technology, community engagement, and the high market value of used aluminium beverage cans to drive impact, including direct payouts for the programme’s participants.”

Blytheville residents can receive a digital payment of $0.30 per pound for cans deposited at the Circularity Center. While the rates may vary based on community and the market value of scrap aluminium, the additional revenue generated will support local community projects.

Replenysh will oversee the technology and network operations in Blytheville and monitor the programme’s outcomes through an impact report.

The global aluminium recycling process is notably less carbon-intensive than the production of primary aluminium, reducing carbon emissions by 95%.

Although the Circularity Center will accept PET #1 plastic bottles for recycling, digital rewards will be given for recycling aluminium cans only.

Blytheville mayor Melisa Logan said: “The Cans for Cash programme is a self-sustaining recycling model and will help fund future recycling efforts. The city of Blytheville is honoured to work with Replenysh and Every Can Counts US on this critical circularity project.

“Activating our recycling potential, igniting a circular economy, and improving recycling behaviour has been a goal of our city for years. This partnership gives our city a strategy that we hope produces big recycling gains for every resident in our community. Our new Cans for Cash Circularity Center will increase consumer awareness and incentivise a recycling model that can be easily replicated in communities across America.”
