Speciality manufacturer Contempo Specialty Packaging has unveiled a new compostable packaging system, designed to offer a sustainable solution for the legal cannabis sector.
The compostable flower pod cannabis packaging system consists of two components: a recyclable, resealable, child-resistant all-metal tin, and a one-time-use child-resistant pod comprising a biobased resin.
The resin is certified by DIN CERTCO and the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) for both home and industrial compostability.
Dispensary customers will receive both the reusable metal tin and home-compostable bioresin pod on their first purchase, however, they will receive only the pod on subsequent purchases.
Contempo CEO Michael Markarian said: “We wanted to create the most sustainable cannabis packaging option possible.
“The idea of reusable packaging is great, but the cost of shipping products to sterilisation facilities has environmental impacts, not to mention the water consumption in sterilisation. This pod system reduces the amount of waste and other environmental impacts as well.”
