Champion Breweries introduces canned beverages

Champion Breweries, a Nigerian brewery and packaging company, has introduced its flagship products, Champion Lager Beer and Champ Malta, in one-way packaging, commemorating its golden jubilee.

The company, established in July 1974, has launched its first brand operations two years later.

During the unveiling event in Uyo on Tuesday, Champion Breweries managing director and CEO Inalegwu Adoga highlighted the significance of the new non-returnable cans, marking a shift in the company’s packaging strategy.

According to him, this change caters to the increasing consumer preference for convenience and mobility.

Inalegwu Adoga said: “After 50 years of brewing excellence, the launch of our products in CAN formats is a testament to our commitment to innovation and growth.

“This move not only enhances consumer convenience but also reflects our continuous effort to adapt to market dynamics while staying true to the quality that Champion is known for.”

The new cans will be distributed across strategic markets initially, with plans for further expansion.

Champion Breweries Sales and Commercial Excellence head Anthony Osagwu said: “We have listened closely to our distributors, bulk breakers and consumers. The introduction of cans aligns with market preferences, especially in regions where non-returnable packaging is increasingly sought after. This launch allows us to penetrate new market segments and expand our reach beyond the South-South and South-East regions.”

The chairman of the Board of Directors, Iniabasi Jacob, shared his view about the company’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and community engagement, particularly in the South-South region.

He expressed that the canned brands have been a long-held ambition due to the limitations of bottle distribution.

The product launch also saw distributors expressing their needs, with requests for Champion bottled water and other fruit drinks.

The company’s move into one-way packaging is seen as a response to evolving market needs and a step towards broadening its distribution reach.

Champion Breweries marketing and brand Manager Queen Nwabueze said: “This launch is part of our larger vision to grow our market share and resonate with younger, dynamic consumers who value convenience without compromising taste.”
