I have always been a fan of type-driven packaging design, and Old Grand-Dad 16yr’s packaging from Tavern pulls directly from archival brand elements, with typography at its core.
Designed in partnership with the James B. Beam Distilling Company (JBBDCo), the one-time-only limited release celebrates the brand’s legacy, with a refreshed wordmark that utilizes hatching in favor of the usual solid black fill. A subtle drop shadow adds a dimensional quality to the lettering, creating a label that feels rooted yet refreshed, while the yellow backdrop adds a pleasant but purposeful nod to the brand’s past.
The finishing touches, like the textured black lettering, an embossed wax seal featuring a custom Old Grand-Dad monogram, and a neck ribbon inspired by Old Grand-Dad 114’s packaging from the 80s and 90s, breathe new life into the brand while staying true to Old Grand-Dad’s past.
