Graphic Packaging to shut paperboard facility in Middletown, Ohio

Graphic Packaging Holding Company has revealed plans to shut its coated recycled paperboard manufacturing plant in Middletown, Ohio, US.

The plant closure, expected to take place by 1 June 2025, is estimated to impact approximately 130 employees.

This decision forms part of a previously disclosed plan to consolidate the company’s recycled paperboard production into fewer sites.

The company will shift the site’s operations to its facilities in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and a new site in Waco, Texas, with the Waco facility set to commence commercial production later this year.

The move is in line with Graphic Packaging’s strategy to strengthen its competitive position in the paperboard manufacturing sector.

It also supports the company’s broader goals of achieving environmental gains such as enhanced water and energy efficiency.

Graphic Packaging president and CEO Michael Doss said: “I want to thank the Middletown team which has played an important role in the growth and success of Graphic Packaging. We are working closely with affected employees to provide employment placement assistance and support.

“Graphic Packaging’s investments in innovation and execution capabilities have made us the global leader in sustainable consumer packaging.

“With Waco moving quickly toward completion and transition inventory in place, this is the right time to further simplify our paperboard manufacturing footprint.”

In February this year, Graphic Packaging posted a net income of $138m for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2024, down from $196m a year earlier.

Q4 also saw a net charge of $41m from special items and intangibles amortisation, versus $34m in Q4 2023.
