International Paper begins construction of packaging plant in Iowa

Sustainable packaging solutions provider International Paper has initiated the construction of a new packaging facility in Waterloo, Iowa, US.

This new greenfield US box plant is strategically positioned in the Midwest and will concentrate on catering to the protein industry by offering custom packaging solutions that align with the increasing demand for sustainable packaging options.

The Waterloo plant will be equipped with advanced technology and machinery, enabling International Paper to produce eco-friendly and innovative packaging products.

International Paper noted that the facility’s design incorporates contemporary safety standards and the latest technological advancements in the industry.

Operations at this new plant are expected to commence in the last quarter of 2026. It is projected to bring approximately 65 additional jobs to the existing workforce, expanding the team to a total of 190 members.

International Paper Group vice-president John Berry said: “We are thrilled to break ground and invest in our company and the city of Waterloo.

“This facility represents our dedication to growing in markets where we want to compete, advancing our capabilities and ensuring our customers receive quality and reliable products.

“We look forward to our continued future in Waterloo and are very grateful to everyone who has made today possible.”

Last month, International Paper entered into exclusive discussions with Germany-based PALM Group for the sale of five corrugated packaging facilities in Europe.

Three of the five plants are located in Normandy, France. These comprised box plants in Saint-Amand and Mortagne, and a sheet facility in Cabourg.

The remaining two are situated in Ovar, Portugal, and Bilbao, Spain. The divestment formed part of regulatory obligations stemming from International Paper’s acquisition of DS Smith.
