Georgia-Pacific to shut Cedar Springs containerboard facility in US

Georgia-Pacific has announced its plan to close its containerboard facility situated in Cedar Springs, Georgia, US, later this year.

This move will impact around 535 positions at the site. The majority of roles are anticipated to be terminated by 1 August 2025.

Ultimately, all positions at the Cedar Springs facility will be affected by the shutdown, the company said.

Georgia-Pacific indicated that a variety of factors contributed to this decision.

The company expressed that it does not believe the facility can competitively meet customer needs in the long term.

It added that the decision does not reflect on the performance of the employees at the Cedar Springs facility.

Operations at the plant will proceed for a limited time to meet current customer obligations.

Georgia-Pacific says it is focused on ensuring safe operations while providing support to employees throughout this transition.

Specifically, it will help its staff in accessing local support services and job placement resources, including potential roles within Georgia-Pacific or other Koch enterprises.

Last month, Georgia-Pacific appointed Keith Hamilton as the new president of its Corrugated business segment.

Hamilton will lead operations and commercial teams across a network of 35 sites, including box plants, sheet feeders, and digital print and mailing brands.

Since his association with Georgia-Pacific in 2018, Hamilton has been the regional area operations leader for the Corrugated division at the company.

Prior to joining Georgia-Pacific, he held positions at General Motors and Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, and also served as a nuclear plant operator in the US Navy.
