Elopak introduces Natural White Board for fresh liquids

Global packaging provider Elopak has launched a new paperboard solution intended for fresh liquids within chilled distribution systems.

The Natural White Board aspires to decrease the carbon footprint of packaging by as much as 14% when compared to standard board cartons, the company said.

Created in collaboration with Stora Enso, the new board will be accessible across Elopak’s Pure-Pak cartons in all regions.

Elopak said this initiative underscores the company’s dedication to sustainability and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in its product range.

The board incorporates a specialised finishing technique that produces a naturally smooth outer surface, removing the necessity for traditional clay coatings.

This innovative method also diminishes the quantity of plastic coating, specifically polyethylene (PE), thereby further improving the carton’s environmental impact.

The launch of this board follows the principles established with Elopak’s Natural Brown Board, which was introduced in 2017.

Natural Brown Board is produced from unbleached paper fibres, requiring less energy and chemicals during manufacturing.

In contrast, the new white paperboard employs bleached fibres solely in the top layer, achieving a pristine white appearance while utilising less PE than standard alternatives.

Elopak product and development executive vice-president Uwe Schulze said: “Drawing upon decades of innovation, the Pure-Pak carton remains iconic in fibre-based packaging. With the introduction of the Natural White Board, customers can further improve their carbon footprint significantly.

“This latest innovation empowers our customers to choose a more sustainable packaging solution while still benefitting from traditional white paperboard that offers greater design flexibility and stands out on the supermarket shelves.”
