Plastic recycling equipment manufacturer EREMA has upgraded its plastics recycling solution, the INTAREMA system in response to the increasing demand for post-consumer recycled pellets in sensitive applications such as food and cosmetics packaging.
The new INTAREMA system is capable of processing over four tonnes per hour.
The larger size of the extruder screw in large plastics recycling plants presents significant technological challenges.
EREMA has addressed these by developing the smaller INTAREMA 2021 TVEplus, which features a single end-to-end extrusion unit. The 2021 model without a cascade is expected to be launched at the K 2025 trade show in October 2025.
This system not only maximises throughput at up to 3.5 tonnes per hour but also reduces the system’s footprint and energy consumption while improving pellet quality.
The new INTAREMA 2021 TVEplus utilises Counter Current technology to feed the extruder with preheated material, enhancing the quality of recycled pellets.
To ensure the quality of recycled pellets for food and cosmetic grade applications, EREMA has initiated approval projects and received positive non objection letters from a US authority for various plastics.
The combination of INTAREMA TVEplus RegrindPro and the ReFresher is critical in cleaning and decontaminating input material to meet the stringent requirements of food safety authorities.
EREMA Group Post Consumer Recycling business development manager Clemens Kitzberger said: “A key driver of these projects is the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which stipulates a recyclate content of 10% in sensitive packaging and 30% in all packaging from 2030 onwards.
“We are confident that we will obtain these approvals with our technologies. We use our expertise to provide our customers with the support they need during the proceedings.”
EREMA collaborates closely with partners such as Lindner Washtech. This joint venture has led to optimised recycling processes that produce consistent recyclate quality with reduced energy consumption.
An example of this collaboration is the project at Polymer Matters in Ireland, which is seeking European Commission approval to use recycled HDPE milk bottles for new bottle production.
