INEOS Styrolution circular packaging breakthrough hits German markets

INEOS Styrolution, a producer of high-performance styrenics, has rolled out sour cream cups made with 30% recycled polystyrene (PS) across German supermarkets.

The product is now available in ALDI SÜD stores across the country, marking an advancement in sustainable food packaging for mass-market consumption.

The product is developed in collaboration with ALDI SÜD and Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller. The collaboration highlights the rising industry shift towards circular PS food-contact packaging.

INEOS Styrolution EMEA president Rob Buntinx said: “INEOS Styrolution is turning the promise of recycled polystyrene into a practical reality.

“We’re proving that circular solutions can meet both food safety standards and performance demands. We’re calling on the entire value chain to join us in making circularity the new normal.”

The launch of these sour cream cups is the second commercial rollout of food-grade recycled PS by the company with a German retailer.

As the packaging industry braces for more stringent EU regulations under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, INEOS Styrolution has submitted a formal application to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for its novel recycling technology.

With several food-grade applications of recycled PS already in the market and more on the horizon, INEOS Styrolution is contributing to a paradigm shift.

The company is transitioning from single-use plastics to scalable, circular solutions that are designed to meet the needs of the future.

INEOS Styrolution is 100% owned by INEOS Group.

Last month, INEOS Styrolution launched its 100% ‘bio-attributed’ PS solution, Styrolution PS 158K BC100, for food packaging applications.

The company also launched a new Zylar grade of methyl methacrylate butadiene styrene materials in January 2024.
