Saudi Arabia has introduced new regulations concerning the packaging and labelling of fruits and vegetables sold in public markets.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) announced these measures on September 18, 2025, aiming to enhance food safety, ensure quality control, and support environmental sustainability.

Labelling requirements for packaged produce
Under the new regulations, all retail units of packaged fruits and vegetables must display a label containing specific information.
This includes the product name, net weight, packaging date, country of origin, and details of the supplier or producer, such as the agricultural registration number, name, and logo.
These labelling standards aim to provide consumers with clear and accurate information about the products they purchase.
Packaging standards for food safety and sustainability
The regulations stipulate that packaging materials must be food-grade, durable, recyclable, and allow adequate air circulation to maintain the freshness of the produce.
Plastic and cardboard packaging are permitted; however, cardboard boxes must be made of corrugated material and include a lid of the same strength to withstand storage pressures.
Additionally, cardboard boxes used for palletised packaging must be externally covered to prevent contamination during storage and transport.
The inner surfaces of these boxes may be lined, coated, or treated with moisture-resistant materials, provided such treatments do not negatively affect the fruit.
