Scottish paper packaging specialist McLaren Packaging has rolled out a range of recyclable presentation tubes for the UK spirits market.
The company emphasises that while presentation tubes are synonymous with whisk(e)y, most cannot be easily recycled despite being made of two of the most widely recycled materials globally: metal and card.

Cardboard tubes are also challenging to separate for recycling because the metal bases are securely fitted to the paper structures.
McLaren’s new tubes include square and oval shapes with vertical perforations on the side of the pack and a horizontal perforation at the rear, allowing the paper body and metal base to be separated and recycled.
The patent-pending solution has received approval from On Pack Recycling Label (OPRL), the UK body which provides guidelines to consumers for accurate recycling.
McLaren has also released a mono-material tube with a paper base for simpler recycling.
According to the company, several well-known spirits brands, including Bushmills Single Malt Irish Whiskey, have already adopted its packaging solutions and saved more than 300 metric tonnes from ending up in landfill every year.
McLaren sales and marketing director Michael McLaren commented: “We forecast that, by the end of 2025, this new design equates to the recovery of 212 metric tons of metal and 867 metric tons of paper. If all our clients switched to our new recyclable tubes, we estimate that it would save 1780 metric tonnes per annum from going to landfill.”
The company has committed to halving its carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero before 2050.
