Petite Palates launches baby meals using SIG aseptic pouches in US

US-based baby food brand Petite Palates has introduced a new range of baby meals in the US using SIG’s aseptic spouted pouch system.

The products are filled using SIG’s aseptic process during which the food and the packaging are sterilised separately then brought together in a sterile filling environment before sealing.

This approach allows the meals to be stored for an extended period without preservatives or refrigeration before opening.

Petite Palates co-founder Debby Goan stated: “We chose SIG’s aseptic spouted pouch technology because it allows us to deliver the kind of baby meals we believe parents are looking for – nutrient-rich, flavourful and free from unnecessary preservatives or additives.”

Unlike conventional retort processing, which involves longer heat treatment, the aseptic method applies ultra-high temperature for a shorter time to better maintain flavour, colour and nutrient content.

The spouted pouch format is lightweight, resealable and space-efficient, designed to eliminate cold-chain logistics and support broader retail and e-commerce distribution.

Petite Palates’ products display SIG’s Clean Commit logo, which identifies foods “filled using advanced aseptic technology to preserve quality without preservatives or refrigeration”.

The launch reflects rising consumer demand for baby food presented as cleaner and easier to use.

The Petite Palates range includes Lentils with Spinach, Chickpeas with Greens and Bean & Veggie.

The meals feature ingredients such as turmeric, cumin, ginger and basil, with the brand framing them as suitable for the “critical flavour window” in infant development, with the intention of exposing babies to a wider variety of tastes.

SIG North America spouted pouches marketing manager Anna Rabanus added: “With aseptic technology, brands like Petite Palates can bring safe, nutritious meals to market more efficiently, while also lowering energy use across processing, transport and storage. It’s a win for both families and sustainability.”

SIG, based in Neuhausen, Switzerland, reported production of 57 billion packs and revenue of €3.3bn ($3.8bn) in 2024.

The company has 9,600 employees and provides aseptic carton, bag-in-box and spouted pouch packaging solutions in more than 100 markets worldwide.

India’s Zydus Lifesciences recently teamed up with SIG to launch its liquid cough and cold medicine in single-serve spouted pouches.
