Tetra Pak has launched a paper-based barrier for aseptic juice cartons, working with Spanish beverage company García Carrión.
The food packaging and processing company has introduced the new offering in several markets.

The barrier is being used first in the Tetra Brik Aseptic 200 ml Slim Leaf format for García Carrión’s Don Simón line.
This is the initial global application of a paper-based barrier in a juice portion carton, and the first time the material has been deployed in Spain.
The new package structure incorporates up to 80% paper, and the use of plant-derived polymers in the coatings takes the renewable share to 92%.
Verification by the Carbon Trust indicates a 43% reduction in carbon footprint compared with a conventional aseptic carton containing aluminium foil and fossil-based polymers.
The aluminium layer has been substituted with a renewable, paper-based barrier designed to shield the product from oxygen, light, moisture and bacteria, while maintaining shelf-life performance in line with current aseptic cartons.

According to Tetra Pak, the updated material can be collected and recycled where systems allow.
The higher paper content is expected to support recycling processes by increasing fibre recovery and preserving the quality of both fibre and non-fibre components.
The development is part of Tetra Pak’s wider programme aimed at creating what it refers to as “the world’s most sustainable food package”, prioritising renewable or recycled inputs and a fully recyclable, low-carbon design.
The company previously introduced an aseptic carton featuring this barrier in partnership with a dairy producer in Portugal in 2023.
Tetra Pak packaging solutions executive vice-president Tatiana Liceti added: “This launch represents a significant step in our journey towards fully renewable and recyclable packaging. By working closely with our customers, we’re proving that sustainable innovation can scale across markets and categories, while ensuring packaging retains its functionality and quality.”
