PureCycle and Plastic Ingenuity partner to develop sustainable coffee lids

PureCycle and Plastic Ingenuity partner to develop sustainable coffee lids


Plastic Ingenuity has collaborated with US plastics recycling company PureCycle Technologies to enhance coffee lid production.

Under the partnership, Plastic Ingenuity is using PureCycle’s PureFive recycled polypropylene to make coffee lids, containing 25% to 100% recycled content.

The project centres on supplying recycled-content packaging for the food service sector.

Coffee lids were identified as a high-volume product where the use of virgin plastic can be reduced.

Plastic Ingenuity sustainability and innovation director Zach Muscato said: “Plastic Ingenuity has always focused on helping our customers navigate the evolving demands of sustainable packaging.

“Integrating PureFive resin into our coffee lid platform allows us to deliver a recycled solution that maintains the quality, consistency, and performance our customers expect. This is a meaningful step forward in supporting our partners’ sustainability goals without compromise.”

PureFive resin is made through PureCycle’s dissolution recycling process.

The process removes colour, odour, additives and other plastics from post-consumer polypropylene, producing a recycled material with characteristics comparable to virgin resin.

The resin is GreenCircle Certified for recycled content and is cleared for food-contact use through a no objection letter from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

This allows its use in food-contact packaging applications.

PureCycle director of sustainability and external affairs Christian Bruey commented: “Plastic Ingenuity is a strong example of how forward-thinking manufacturers are leading the transition to more sustainable packaging.

“We are proud to support their efforts by providing a recycled polypropylene solution that helps meet both performance and sustainability requirements in demanding applications like coffee lids.”

In February, PureCycle and Toppan partnered to develop more sustainable flexible films and thermoformed packaging.

That work produced a snack bar wrapper with more than 30% recycled content using PureCycle’s PureFive resin.
