Mountain Dew Goes Back to 1948, and It Will Only Cost You a Nickel

Mountain Dew Goes Back to 1948, and It Will Only Cost You a Nickel

Soda brands are leaning into origin stories right now, and Mountain Dew’s limited-edition commemorative can is a very committed execution of the trend.

The backstory dives into the two brothers in the hills of Tennessee who created a citrus drink in 1948 that was unlike anything else on shelves, and nearly 80 years later, Mountain Dew is putting that story directly on the can and selling it for five cents on TikTok Shop.

The design leans on deep forest green, replacing the modern neon. A gold banner stamped with THE ORIGINAL runs across the middle, and a detailed, engraving-style illustration of snow-capped mountains, pine forests, and a rushing waterfall covers the body, looking lifted straight from a 1940s national park poster. The logo gets a throwback treatment, too, that feels period-accurate rather than just nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake.
