We’re all so used to our cards being neatly tucked into a little red or blue box. So used to it that anything else feels like a spectacle. A good one, though.
Root Playing Cards, designed by Studio These Days, come in two colorways. One is a blazing orange with yellow cloud-shaped blob badges, and the other is a clean cream with deep blue type and soft pink flower shapes, both scattered with tiny illustrated suit icons reimagined as colorful geometric characters.
The overall design language draws on the same maximalist, playful graphic tradition as nostalgic toy brands, but filtered through a contemporary graphic design sensibility. In a toy and game market that is rediscovering the power of design as a purchase driver for adults and kids, Root is clear proof that a deck of cards can be just as considered as anything else on a design lover’s shelf.
