For Designers Looking to Further Their Education Beyond School, Tutorials and Other Skills Are Often Hiding in Plain Sight

Like many professional endeavors, design demands that pixel pushers and other creatives-types continually refresh and hone their skills and knowledge base. Sure, software changes over time, but maybe there’s a trend or technique you’d like to know how to implement in your projects, or you may feel the nagging pull to bolster your proficiency in a particular area, like typography.

Returning to school and sitting in classes is undoubtedly an option, but there are better approaches to continuing your skills. Because, honestly, who has time for that on top of full-time employment, family, and other obligations? Secondly, that kind of coursework isn’t the kind of instruction you need, nor is it designed for you if the goal is to learn one specific technique or you’re not starting from zero on a subject. Plus, an institution of higher learning isn’t necessarily the sole source of furthering your education and craft, especially in today’s climate.

The same little machine you use to share your work, drum up new business, and network with other professionals in the field can also be utilized to continue your learning. Many design-related courses and tutorials are available online, including plenty of websites you may already frequent, like LinkedIn and YouTube. Many of these resources are available free-of-cost. Other courses and classes are behind paywalls, though you might already have free access and not know it!
