Innovative packaging design cuts costs and waste

In response to increasing demand for eco-friendly solutions, KHS Group has introduced the Nature MultiPack – a packaging innovation that eliminates the need for plastic film.

Developed in collaboration with the Hinojosa Packaging Group, the system integrates a simple yet effective cardboard carrying handle, the BottleClip Carrier, offering a sustainable alternative for beverage packaging.

“By replacing shrink film with adhesive dots, we’ve managed to reduce material consumption by 85% compared to conventional packaging,” said Manfred van Triel, project manager at KHS. “What’s more, energy requirements for production are cut to just one-third in some cases.”

The BottleClip Carrier, crafted from kraft paper, enhances the Nature MultiPack by ensuring plastic-free convenience. Its minimalist design allows consumers to carry packs securely, with the handle slotting over two bottles in each pack, no matter the size.

This practical and sustainable approach aligns with growing consumer and legislative calls for greener solutions.

Consumer comfort and operational flexibility

Traditional plastic handles often dig into shoppers’ hands when carrying heavier packs. The BottleClip Carrier addresses this issue with a design that bends upwards during use, preventing discomfort from sharp edges or bottle caps.

Once home, the handle can be recycled alongside other paper waste, making it a practical and environmentally friendly choice.

The packaging system also boasts impressive versatility. It accommodates multipacks of two to eight PET bottles, with capacities ranging from 250 millilitres to two litres. “We’ve ensured that all pack sizes share a cohesive design and functionality,” explained van Triel. This required only minor adjustments to punching dies to suit varying bottle diameters and volumes, ensuring seamless usability.

Innovative design backed by rigorous testing

The BottleClip Carrier was developed through an iterative design process, with extensive testing conducted at every stage. “We focused on achieving a shape that is not only simple but also highly functional,” van Triel noted.

The final design supports smooth processing on KHS machines, ensuring that production efficiency remains uncompromised.

Another key advantage lies in logistics. The handle cartridges are compactly supplied in secondary cartons, minimising space requirements. The innovative system reduces machine length by up to four metres compared to conventional setups, a significant benefit for beverage producers with limited floor space.

The industry has shown strong interest in this eco-friendly solution, with several projects already underway. “It’s rare to find a multipack that uses less material than this,” said van Triel, underscoring the system’s environmental and economic appeal.

KHS Group’s Nature MultiPack, combined with the BottleClip Carrier, demonstrates a clear commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting a new standard for the beverage industry.
