TomKat Koolpack expands sustainable packaging solutions in Southeast Asia

Australia’s packaging company TomKat Koolpack is set to broaden its reach in the Southeast Asia market by partnering with Malaysian fresh food retailer Segi Fresh.

This initiative is part of an investment agreement with Mandalay Venture Partners to position TomKat’s cold-chain packaging solutions at the forefront of sustainable logistics in the region.

Segi Fresh is focused on enhancing its supply chain with technology-driven efficiencies, with TomKat’s near-field communication (NFC)-enabled thermal containers playing a crucial role in reducing the use of polystyrene and ice in the distribution of fresh food.

The Malaysian company aims to expand its retail outlets to 200 from the current 100 units before the end of 2025.

The integration of TomKat’s Koolpack into Segi Fresh’s logistics network is expected to improve temperature control, extend the shelf life of fresh produce, and significantly decrease environmental impact.

PKN Packaging News reported that this collaboration is part of Mandalay Venture Partners’ broader initiative to incorporate ‘agritech’ innovations into Segi Fresh’s supply chain, capitalising on Australia’s robust food trade relationship with Malaysia.

The Australian company sees this partnership as a key move in its global expansion, following its shift of manufacturing to Chon Buri, Thailand, closer to key suppliers and Southeast Asian markets.

TomKat co-founder Tom Long was quoted by PKN Packaging News as saying: “Our mission has always been to provide a sustainable, high-performance alternative to traditional cold-chain packaging.

“By working with Segi Fresh, we’re not only reducing waste in the supply chain but also ensuring fresher, higher-quality food reaches consumers across Malaysia and beyond.”
