Huhtamaki launches recyclable dairy packaging cups

Huhtamaki, a provider of sustainable food packaging solutions, has introduced ProDairy, a recyclable single-coated paper cup tailored for yoghurt and dairy products.

The ProDairy cups are produced in Europe using paperboard derived from renewable wood fibres via sustainably managed forests.

Huhtamaki said that it has conducted extensive testing to ensure the new product meets stringent quality standards.

With ProDairy now ready for market deployment, Huhtamaki is poised to offer a more sustainable option for dairy packaging to its customers.

The company noted that its new packaging solution features a polymer content of less than 10% across its entire range, making it fully recyclable in Europe’s recycling streams.

According to the company, one of the primary challenges in the dairy packaging sector is maintaining a perfect seal and lid fit, especially with reduced polymer content.

The new dairy packaging features a distinctive rim design and forming process that ensures superior top rim sealing.

The company also said its proprietary sealing varnish technology guarantees robust side seam sealing for strong cup performance.

Huhtamaki Europe-Asia-Oceania Fiber Foodservice president Fredrik Davidsson said: “Dairy products are an important part of our daily life and creating recyclable packaging for something as important as your morning yoghurt has been a challenge, especially while maintaining the high-performance standards required for dairy products.

“I am proud of our team and excited that we can now offer this solution to our customers at scale. Our solution is highly functional in terms of product performance and barrier properties, and it is a cost-efficient solution which meets customer and consumer expectations regarding our innovation in food packaging.

“These recyclable single-coated paper cups help our customers address consumer demands for reduced plastic in packaging.”

Last month, Huhtamaki announced that it would split its Fiber Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania business segment into two separate units: Fiber Packaging and Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania.
