Portugal is preparing to launch its national deposit return scheme (DRS) for single-use beverage containers by 2026.
The scheme will be administrated by the non-profit SDR Portugal, with Sensoneo, a waste management technology firm, providing the necessary IT solutions.
Sensoneo’s technological platform will manage key aspects of the DRS, including reverse logistics.
This system will focus on tracking, collection, and overseeing the movement of containers, warehouses, and transport operations.
Additionally, various mobile applications will be introduced to improve communication and coordination among all involved stakeholders.
Portugal’s plan includes establishing a network of collection points, with estimates ranging from 7,000 to 10,000 locations.
One of the distinctive aspects of Portugal’s DRS is its integration of the hotel, restaurant, and catering (HoReCa) sectors.
While Malta launched its own DRS in late 2022, Sensoneo believes that Portugal’s scheme will act as a model for larger neighbouring nations.
Sensoneo aims to build on its experience from Malta, ensuring that these venues contribute to the scheme’s success. This integration will help achieve higher collection rates across a variety of industries.
In January, the UK Government announced plans to introduce legislation for a deposit return scheme (DRS) for bottles and cans across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
The implementation of the scheme is scheduled in October 2027. Once implemented, consumers will be financially encouraged to return empty containers to collection points like local supermarkets, ensuring proper recycling.
