Mondi’s containerboard machine commences operations at Italian mill

Packaging and paper group Mondi has commenced operations at its Duino mill in Italy.

The ramp-up phase at the mill is focused on consistent output of high-quality recycled containerboard.

This product, derived entirely from recovered fibre, is particularly suited for the production of lightweight corrugated packaging.

Such packaging solutions are both cost-effective and recyclable, meeting the demands of sectors such as e-commerce and consumer goods.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, the facility will produce 420,000 tonnes of recycled containerboard each year.

This expansion will not only bolster Mondi’s operational integration but also ensure a more reliable supply for the company’s clientele.

Mondi Corrugated Packaging CEO Markus Gärtner said: “Starting up this machine on time is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team. With Mondi Duino now part of our integrated value chain, we are excited to serve our customers with sustainable packaging solutions from our expanded network of six containerboard mills worldwide.”

The Duino mill aims to procure materials from local sources wherever feasible, thereby supporting the regional economy and curtailing greenhouse gas emissions by minimising transportation distances.

Furthermore, the new containerboard machine is set to improve Mondi’s supply chain integration and resilience, ultimately benefiting customers.

Mondi acquired the Duino papermill in 2023 from graphics and speciality paper company Burgo Group for a total sum of €40m ($43.3m).

Following this acquisition, Mondi initiated the construction of its €200m recycled containerboard mill at the site in May 2024.
