Target’s 2025 Pride Merch Misses the Mark

The self-inflicted blows keep coming for Minneapolis-based retailer Target.

After deciding to remove Pride merchandise in 2023 and a limited rollout in 2024, Target has brought the collection back, but with a fumbling execution that has become a crippling hallmark of the brand.

This year’s Target Pride merchandise features a lot of beige and some rainbows, though, in some instances, its vague rainbow-like patterns against neutral colors whisper Pride more than speak it. There is a set of birds called “Gal and Pal” with a moving truck, which is a nod to a common lesbian trope about quickly moving in together. However, it may be in poor taste to make such jokes after dismantling DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives earlier this year. Seems like a “laughing at” rather than a “laughing with” situation. The use of “Pal” is also reminiscent of non-cis couples having to refer to their partners as “friends” or “roommates” to hide their relationships for safety or to avoid homophobia.
