Mondi develops recyclable pet food packaging for Saga Nutrition

Packaging manufacturer Mondi has partnered with French pet food manufacturer Saga Nutrition to introduce recyclable packaging for Saga’s dry pet food products.

The packaging solution is made from monomaterial instead of the previously used nonrecyclable multi-material plastic.

The re/cycle FlexiBag is part of Mondi’s re/cycle portfolio and is designed to meet the company’s internal Path to Circularity Scorecard criteria, as well as CEFLEX recycling guidelines.

Featuring strong barrier properties, FlexiBag prevents moisture, fat, and odour, and is available for products weighing 3kg or more.

Mondi France Regional Sales Consumer Flexibles’ Olivier Werbrouck said: “As consumer demand for sustainable solutions grows, we are excited to work with Saga Nutrition to deliver packaging that truly supports a circular economy when it comes to pet food.”

The design of the new packaging includes features that offer secure sealing to aid in easy storage and handling, catering to the convenience needs of pet owners.

Additionally, its durable construction provides reliable protection during shipping processes.

This change reportedly supports the circular economy without compromising the freshness of the pet food.

Saga Nutrition CEO Jérôme de Solliers said: “This collaboration with Mondi is a key milestone in our sustainability journey. By transitioning to recyclable monomaterial packaging, we’re contributing to a circular economy while maintaining the high quality our customers trust.”

In April this year, Mondi also collaborated with chemical company Evonik to launch a recyclable, ready-made paper bag for storing chemical powders, which can reduce the environmental impact of transporting fumed silica.
