Huhtamaki India discusses plastic waste measures at UNEP roundtable

Packaging solutions provider Huhtamaki India joined a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) roundtable on World Environment Day 2025, focusing on sustainable packaging solutions.

The event, held at the UN House in New Delhi, India, brought together experts to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable development.

Huhtamaki’s Ruturaj Kamthekar represented the company in discussions moderated by UNEP goodwill ambassador Dia Mirza.

Kamthekar emphasised the significance of flexible packaging in improving the accessibility and affordability of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs), particularly in developing markets. He advocated for the rapid adoption of existing circular solutions to enhance sustainability.

“At Huhtamaki, we see packaging not as waste, but as a valuable resource,” he stated.

In India, only about 8% of plastic waste is reportedly recycled, mostly through informal systems. Kamthekar highlighted the necessity for improved infrastructure, better collection models, and clear recyclability guidelines to keep materials in circulation.

Huhtamaki, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry, recently hosted Think Circle, introducing the Design for Recycling Guidance for Films and Flexible Packaging.

These guidelines provide practical advice for transitioning to recyclable flexible packaging, aiming for a more cohesive and circular industry standard.

Kamthekar added: “We’ve made meaningful investments in developing recyclable flexible packaging. What we need now is a stronger legislative push for adoption of recyclable packaging in India, followed by adoption of the same by players across the value chain. These solutions are available at scale and at affordable prices.”

Last week, Huhtamaki secured a €150m ($173m) freely transferable loan (Schuldschein) aimed at institutional investors for refinancing.
