Preferred Packaging launches new fibre trays for sustainable meal packaging

Preferred Packaging has introduced GreenStream multi-compartment fibre trays designed for packaged meals.

These trays are both compostable and recyclable in areas with paper recycling facilities.

They are suitable for microwave, freezer, and oven use, featuring a peelable liner that simplifies the removal process for composting or recycling, thereby reducing the likelihood of food residue hindering the recycling process.

The trays are free from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and are designed to be strong, resistant to oil and moisture, and capable of preventing leaks and discolouration.

Made from bagasse plant fibres, the GreenStream trays are produced in an environmentally responsible manner that does not generate wastewater, according to the company.

This product aims to assist brands in transitioning to sustainable packaging solutions while adhering to extended producer responsibility regulations.

Additionally, the engineered surface of the GreenStream trays is compatible with Preferred Packaging’s range of recyclable and compostable lidding films, as well as various other lidding options.

Preferred Packaging general manager Chadd Floria said: “GreenStream fibre trays give prepared meals a sustainable packaging upgrade without sacrificing performance.

“We engineered our fibre trays to provide brands with an economical solution that reduces environmental impact and complies with evolving packaging regulations.”

Preferred Packaging, a division of C-P Flexible Packaging, offers integrated packaging systems such as multilayer flexible films, thermoformed containers, and tray sealing equipment for prepared meals.

The company also provides the Affirm recyclable and compostable lidding films and OmniSeal sealing equipment, catering to diverse production volumes and budgets.

In 2023, Preferred Packaging and Northwest Frozen introduced a line of extended shelf-life refrigerated meals, utilising C-P Flexible’s proprietary lidding film from the Affirm family of multilayer packaging materials.
