Valmet to supply automation solution for Klingele Weener paper mill

Finnish company Valmet has secured an order to deliver an advanced automation solution aimed at enhancing resource efficiency at Klingele Paper & Packaging’s Weener paper mill located in northern Germany.

The order involves an integrated solution which will combine three new automation products into the existing automation environment at the mill, reducing surface starch use and energy consumption.

The comprehensive solution includes the Valmet Fiber Furnish Analyzer, Valmet Advanced Process Controls, and Valmet PlantTriage.

These systems will work in conjunction with the mill’s current Valmet DNA, Valmet Quality Control System, and Valmet Paper Lab to create a data-driven optimisation loop.

This integrated approach is designed to streamline operations and minimise resource usage. As the system operates, it continuously identifies methods to improve efficiency, thereby supporting the mill’s sustainability objectives.

The order was recorded in Valmet’s second-quarter 2025 orders received. The value of the order has not been disclosed.

Valmet Automation Solutions senior sales manager Martin Grundmann said: “Three automation solutions will be integrated into the customer’s current automation systems supplied by Valmet. The total solution will create an optimisation loop which continuously collects and analyses data to refine key process variables.”

The Klingele Weener paper mill has a production capacity of 270,000 tonnes of corrugated base paper annually.

The mill places a high priority on sustainability, producing a range of products such as testliner, flute paper, and flexliner from recycled wastepaper.

Klingele Paper Weener operations manager Johannes Reiners said: “We are committed to improving our environmental performance continuously. Taking this new step in digitalisation will help us on that journey.

“The primary goal of this project is to significantly reduce the usage of surface starch. This will also lead to decreased water usage and consequently less steam is required for drying.”

Last week, Valmet secured an order to supply two fine papermaking lines, complete with related automation systems and services, to a Chinese customer.
