The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has called on manufacturers of nicotine pouches to use child-resistant (CR) packaging to protect children from accidental and harmful exposure.
According to the FDA, from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2025, the number of reports of nicotine pouch exposure has steadily increased, with approximately 72% of cases occurring in children under five years of age.
“I am concerned about rising reports of nicotine exposures in young children caused by nicotine pouches,” said FDA commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H., via press release. “The fruity flavors and bright, colorful designs of nicotine pouch products could resemble candy and seem attractive to children. Manufacturers should consider what steps they can take to prevent accidental exposures and ingestion.”
