International Paper to close two packaging facilities in US

Customers will be served from nearby facilities.

International Paper plans to limit workforce disruption through attrition, retirements and filling vacancies at other sites.

Affected employees will receive outplacement assistance, mental-health support and severance benefits.

The closures are part of its plan to streamline operations and focus investment on facilities that better support its quality and service goals.

International Paper North American packaging solutions executive vice-president and president Tom Hamic stated: “Making the decision to close a facility is incredibly difficult, especially knowing the impact it has on our team members and their families.

“We are sincerely grateful for the contributions of our departing team members, and we are fully committed to supporting them through this transition.”

In early November 2025, International Paper announced the closure of five packaging sites in Germany, which will impact 500 jobs.

The move is part of the company’s integration of DS Smith, a UK rival it acquired in January 2025.

The facilities lined up for closure are one conventional box plant, one display and offset site, and three sheet plants, along with a partial closure of another display site.

Closure plans will be implemented by the end of 2026, subject to the outcome of consultations.

In May 2025, Reuters reported that International Paper will shut down five of its UK packaging sites, leading to a loss of 300 jobs.

Two months later, International Paper completed the sale of five European plants to PALM Group.
