Dow and RDM Group unveil recycled food packaging solution

It will be showcased at the interpack trade fair, due to be held in May in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The collaboration unifies RDM Group’s expertise in fibre-based packaging with Dow’s knowledge in circular polymers and recycling solutions.

By combining recycled paper with a coating of advanced recycled polyethylene, the partners have created a solution made completely with recycled materials, which they claim does not affect the functional performance.

Produced at RDM Group’s Fiskeby facility in Sweden, the solution evolves the company’s existing Multiboard Barrier technology.

With a 5% polyethylene coating, the companies noted that this material can be easily processed within standard mixed paper recycling systems.

The sustainability credentials of the new board are backed by several industry certifications.

The plastic component holds ISCC PLUS certification, while the overall solution has been verified for food safety by independent testing institute ISEGA.

Furthermore, the 4evergreen alliance has independently assessed the product.

RDM Group chief sustainability and innovation officer Krzysztof Krajewski said: “In the packaging sector, paper and plastic are often seen as competing materials. Through our collaboration with Dow, we want to help the recycling industry move beyond the siloes of fibre and plastic and focus on accelerating our common goal of advancing circularity and preventing packaging waste.”

This development arrives as the industry prepares for the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates that all packaging on the EU market be recyclable by 2030.

Dow and RDM Group noted that Multiboard CirculaRR helps brands and converters prepare for the PPWR’s goals by utilising advanced recycling to convert plastic waste into “high‑performance plastics with virgin‑like quality”.
