Stora Enso develops sustainable packaging for Wilfa’s ProBaker

Norwegian company Wilfa and sustainable materials company Stora Enso have developed a wood-based packaging solution for the ProBaker kitchen mixer.

This partnership highlights the importance of design, quality, safety, and innovation, proving that sustainable materials can also be aesthetically pleasing.

Stora Enso developed protective inserts for the Wilfa ProBaker product using a combination of Papira and corrugated board.

This blend of wood-based materials provided Wilfa with a packaging solution that complements the clean Nordic design of the 15kg ProBaker.

Wilfa category director Arnt Sandvik Nilsen said: “We will always try to challenge some established truths and technologies. The ProBaker has been developed together with professional bakers and users, and we’re becoming the favourite of advanced and demanding home bakers! When Stora Enso reached out to us with Papira, we found this to be a perfect match for the ProBaker.

“With its 15kg, solid construction and multiple accessories included, this was the perfect match for us. It’s still early in the process of changing the packaging, but with a common goal to reduce and reuse, we aim to test Papira together with ProBaker in the future”.

Papira is a biobased and biodegradable foam made from wood fibres sourced from sustainably managed forests.

It features high shock-absorbing qualities and is fully recyclable within standard paper and board recycling streams. It offers superior protection for heavy items.

The ProBaker’s new packaging design reduces foam usage by 50% and decreases overall box volume by 11%. This reduction lowers emissions and logistics costs, affecting palletising, storage, and shipment.

The product’s protective inserts passed the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) 3A drop test.

Stora Enso packaging designer Kristīne Biteniece said: “This is a beautiful example of how designing packaging with Papira in a way that captures the luxury and quality of the product, can elevate the unboxing experience and provide protection during transit.”

Stora Enso is working on scaling from pilot projects to testing and preparing the implementation of the sustainable packaging solution in industrial production.

The company introduced biobased packaging foam solutions, Fibrease and Papira, in December 2021. Both solutions are made from certified wood.
