Trace One and Citeo join forces to enhance packaging sustainability


Trace One, a software-as-a-service company specialising in product life cycle management (PLM), has partnered with Citeo, an eco-organisation dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of household packaging.

This collaboration aims to assist grocery retailers and national brands in achieving sustainability and regulatory compliance with greater efficiency.

The partnership merges Trace One’s PLM business platform with Citeo’s expertise in recyclability calculations.

The company said this integration provides brand owners with an automated method to assess and improve the environmental footprint of their packaging, setting a new benchmark for innovation and sustainability in the food and beverage industry.

Grocery retailers and food and beverage brand owners are currently grappling with the complexities of stringent regulations, such as the Environmental Qualities and Characteristics decree and upcoming European packaging waste regulations.

Traditional methods of recyclability assessment have been cumbersome and manual, making it challenging to maintain and enhance sustainability practices effectively.

The collaboration between Trace One and Citeo transforms this process by delivering automation, instant insights, and a robust compliance framework.

The transformative process begins with retailers and suppliers entering packaging data into Trace One’s PLM system.

Recyclability scores are then calculated in real-time through integration with Citeo, with strict adherence to customer data protection as no data is stored at Citeo.

The results are fed back into Trace One’s Analytics solution, enabling brands to gain valuable insights to optimise their packaging and achieve sustainability objectives.

Trace One chief product officer Antoine Daviet said: “We believe that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.

“This partnership with Citeo transforms how retailers approach recyclability, empowering them to achieve their goals faster and more effectively than ever before.”

Currently, the Trace One-Citeo integration is being implemented with seven leading French brands, with a phased rollout designed to allow customers to adapt to the solution at a comfortable pace.

Citeo eco-design and reuse head Valentin Fournel said: “In order to support companies in their environmental transition, this strategic partnership with Trace One will enable us to accelerate and facilitate the assessment of the recyclability of all their packaging.

“We need to meet regulatory targets faster than ever and reduce the environmental impact of all packaging materials.”
