RDM Group and Ecopol launch recyclable barrier board with PVOH film

RDM Group, a maker of recycled cartonboard, has teamed up with Ecopol, a producer of biodegradable and water-dissolvable film technologies, to introduce a recyclable barrier board.

This alliance merges RDM’s recycled fibre cartonboard with Ecopol’s polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) functional film, providing a sustainable packaging option that can be adapted for various uses, including food- and scent-sensitive items.

RDM Group chief innovation and sustainability officer Krzysztof Krajewski said: “This pioneering collaboration is an example of the new, cross-industry links that need to be created to meet the demands of the PPWR [EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation].

“Our goal is to create a more sustainable, recycling-friendly material of the future to drive increased circularity.

“We are now looking for brands and converters to develop new types of packaging using this new PVOH-based solution, and invite potential partners to start projects with us.”

The companies claim that the new PVOH film-based barrier board attains Class A recyclability within standard fibre-recycling processes.

Ecopol’s PVOH film, a clear, water-soluble, and biodegradable polymer, acts as an efficient barrier layer.

The film can be adjusted to resist oxygen, grease, moisture, and mineral oils, catering to a broad array of product types.

Ecopol sales and marketing vice-president Mauro Bonfiglio said: “By pairing our functional barrier film with RDM Group’s board, we will create packaging that’s not only functional, but fully recyclable.

“This will be a true step forward in eliminating virgin plastic waste and making sustainable solutions the new standard.

“Our partnership with RDM Group enables brands to adopt recyclable, functional packaging without compromising performance – paving the way for scalable circular solutions.”

Last month, RDM Group launched Multiboard Barrier, a polyethylene-coated cartonboard solution for various packaging needs.
