Ardagh Group unit achieves 25% reduction in scope 3 emissions

Ardagh Group, a company operating in sustainable aluminium and glass packaging, has released its 2024 sustainability report.

The report provides insights into the operations of Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) and Ardagh Glass Packaging (AGP).

Although not currently bound by the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and related European Sustainability Reporting Standards, Ardagh Group has structured its 2024 report to align with these frameworks as much as possible.

The report highlighted that AMP expanded its global renewable electricity coverage to 30%, with Europe at 46% and South America at 43%. AGP increased its renewable electricity usage to 22%, with Europe at 48%.

In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, AMP has achieved a 10% reduction compared with 2023 and an 18% reduction in emissions intensity from the 2020 baseline.

AGP reported a 12% reduction from 2023 and a 16% decrease from 2020 levels.

Additionally, AMP surpassed its 2030 target with a 25% reduction in scope 3 emissions from the 2020 baseline while AGP achieved a 10% reduction.

In terms of circularity, AMP’s beverage cans contain an average of 78% recycled aluminium.

AGP incorporates recycled cullet, sourced both internally and externally, into 56% of the glass used in production processes.

Waste management and water usage also saw improvements, with 83% of AMP’s facilities achieving no waste to landfill and AGP increasing this rate to 35%.

Water withdrawal intensity, meanwhile, improved by 5% for AMP and 13% for AGP.

Ardagh Group chair Herman Troskie said: “We continued to make meaningful progress towards our sustainability goals, guided by our Core Values of Inclusion, Trust, Teamwork and Excellence.

“As a leading manufacturer of highly recyclable aluminium and glass packaging, we understand the responsibility we carry – and the opportunity we have – to contribute to a more sustainable future for both the planet and the communities we serve.

“While our beverage can business delivered strong growth, our glass division navigated a more challenging and dynamic trading environment. Through it all, we remained focused and disciplined, and we continued to invest for a more sustainable future across the Group.”
