Menta’s Design for Almarela Celebrates Ancestral Mexican Roots and Tradition

  • Almarela is a Mexican brand of tortillas and salsa that focuses on using native corn varieties purchased at fair prices directly from family farmers.
  • Menta created a brand identity for Almarela that speaks to Mexican gastronomical roots and traditions in a timeless presentation.

Maíz criollo is the Spanish name for the varieties of corn native to Mexico. Of the 64 corn varieties found in the country, 59 are indigenous to Mexico. It’s by far the most important crop grown in the nation and has been cultivated since pre-Hispanic times.

Almarela is a brand of tortillas and macha salsa made from maíz criollo sourced from smaller producers at a premium price, with the goal of spreading the benefits to as many farms as possible. By offering family farmers a predictable sales avenue and a fair price, Almarela helps ensure the continued cultivation of these indigenous grains.
