Survey reveals UK shoppers favour reuse over single-use plastics

A recent survey conducted by environmental charity City to Sea reveals that a significant majority of UK consumers support the transition from single-use plastics to reusable packaging.

The findings indicate a growing public demand for sustainable packaging solutions and stronger governmental policies to address plastic waste.

Public preference for reusable packaging over recycling

The survey, which included 2,067 UK adults, found that 64% of respondents believe reusable, refillable, and returnable packaging systems are more effective at reducing waste than traditional recycling methods.

Furthermore, 75% agree that recycling alone is insufficient to tackle plastic pollution, emphasizing the need for alternative approaches.

Consumer demand for long-term retailer commitment

The research highlights that 77% of consumers want all retailers to offer reusable, refillable, and returnable packaging options as permanent solutions rather than short-term pilot schemes.

This sentiment reflects a desire for consistent and accessible sustainable packaging choices across the retail sector.

Call for legally binding government targets

In addition to retailer action, 69% of those surveyed believe the government should set legally binding targets for reusable and refillable packaging to drive systemic change.

This perspective underscores the public’s expectation for legislative measures to support the shift towards a circular economy.

The survey results coincide with the upcoming Global Reuse Summit on 12 March 2025, organized by City to Sea in partnership with Ecosurety.

The event aims to bring together stakeholders to discuss strategies for implementing reusable packaging systems and reducing single-use plastic waste.
